Description
1928 WACO GXE
Captured at the historic Ranger Antique Airfield in Texas, this photograph features the elegant nose of a 1928 WACO GXE biplane—an aircraft steeped in history and restored to flying condition. Its signature cowling encloses a rare Curtiss OX-5 engine, making this the only OX-5 powered aircraft known to still fly in Texas.
Originally purchased by two brothers from South Dakota, this very aircraft once flew across Depression-era America in search of work. On New Year’s Day 1930, it soared over Ranger, TX—a moment brought full circle nearly a century later with its return to this storied airfield.
The photograph highlights the craftsmanship of early aviation: the gleaming wooden propeller, leather-strapped cowling, exposed exhaust manifold, and upper-wing radiator all speak to a time when flight was still a grand adventure. Every rib stitch and hand-shaped panel tells a story of resilience, craftsmanship, and timeless style.
Own a piece of living history—an image that captures the romance of the open skies and the enduring spirit of American aviation.
